I just got to know that every first Wednesday in November is Stress Awareness Day. Indeed, there is always something new to learn on daily basis.
Oxford dictionary defines stress as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.
Most books and articles I have read about stress talks about the fact that stress is a normal part of the human life. Even though I wish this is not true, I just have to accept reality! You can feel stressed from your job, relationships, and even your country can also stress the living daylight out of you!
I usually take some time to observe and watch people’s faces whenever I am out of my house (especially people that are either in a public transport or walking on the road) and I found out that I hardly see anyone smiling – almost every one seems to be frowning and I just wonder how much stress people go through on daily basis. You could feel stressed from just quarreling with a friend, a colleague or a family member. You could feel stressed from either your boss or a client putting pressure on you. An ordinary phone call can also make your stress level go from zero to hundred. So how then can one really avoid stress knowing that it can lead to frustration, depression, sadness, anger, anxiety, fear, etc.???? It can also cause a strain in relationships because some people tend to transfer agression (that could be as a result of stress) to others.
I doubt if stress can be avoided but I am sure it can be well managed. Every individual has a way of managing stress. For me, listening to music, playing games, watching movies, taking a walk and sleeping helps me feel better when I am stressed and even staying away from any ‘friend’ that wants to stress my life..lol. In most cases when I am extremely stressed, I usually have what my doctor calls ‘tension headaches’ and once this headache starts, none of the things I mentioned above works. At this point, the only thing that helps me get over the tension headache is cutting off from the cause of the headache. For instance, if the headache begins as a result of the pressure from a job I am doing, I just have to quit that job. Yes! For the sake of my mental health and my life, I just have to quit the job!
Like I said earlier, every individual has a way of dealing with stress or managing stress, so please you need to know what works for you. Always remember that your health and your life comes first. Just like my mum would say, “if you die today, activities will still go on at your work place”.
So today being Stress Awareness Day, I will like you to find ways of dealing with stress that comes daily so that you can be healthy, have a sane mind and also be very productive.
How do you manage or deal with stress? I will really love to hear from you. Kindly drop your comments in the section below.
